Digital Signage Brings Convenience to Local Libraries

As local libraries are transforming once again, it is interesting to see how many libraries are utilizing digital signage as a communication tool to disseminate information. As the variety of services offered by libraries grows, there is a need for up-to-date communication tools to stay relevant beyond the traditional lending of books, CDs and movies.

Digital signage can play an important role in this communication process, in addition to presenting a “green” environment to library users. Messages can be displayed to the public in meeting rooms, at the front desk, in the vestibule, or in the cafeteria or coffee shop. Messaging can range from library events to service announcements to emergency news.

What’s really pleasing is that the cost of doing so is not prohibitive. In the case of the Paterson Library in Paterson, NY, during a major remodeling project in 2011-2012, the library decided to use digital signage in their public rooms, cafeteria, and their children’s activity center.

Even if they couldn’t get the equipment donated, a few commercial screens with CMS player software could still cost less than $2,500. And with any digital signage installation, the key to success is keeping the content flowing, appropriate and fresh. The screens also show local radio and television programs at the same time. When the program is not in use, the screens advertise upcoming events, highlight past events and show other community activities. The library recently added a fourth screen, a second player.
